How to Make Press-On Nails Last Longer

The difference between a set that lifts in a day and one that stays put comes down to a few small habits. None of them take long, and most happen before the first nail goes on.
1. Prep is everything
Glue and tabs grip a clean, matte surface. Remove old polish, push back your cuticles, then lightly buff the shine off each nail. Finish by wiping every nail with the prep wipe from your box or a little rubbing alcohol. Oils from your skin are the most common reason press-ons pop off early, so try not to touch your nails once they're clean.
2. Get the size right
A press-on that's too wide presses on your skin and lifts at the sides. Choose the size that covers your nail from edge to edge without touching the skin, and if you're between two sizes, go smaller and file the sides. Our sizing guide walks you through it.
3. Choose glue when you want staying power
Adhesive tabs are perfect for a day, a weekend or an event, and they come off easily. For longer wear, use glue. Apply a thin layer to your natural nail and a small drop inside the press-on, so the bond covers the whole surface without air gaps.
4. Press, then hold
Line each nail up at the cuticle, angle it down and press. Then hold firm pressure for 20 to 30 seconds, pressing the sides as well as the centre. It feels long, but it's the step most people rush.
5. Give it an hour
Skip hot showers, dishwashing, lotion and long soaks for the first hour or two while the bond settles.
6. Protect your set day to day
- Wear gloves for dishes and cleaning.
- Use your fingertips or a tool, not your nails, to open cans, boxes and packaging.
- Pat your hands dry instead of rubbing them.
7. Shorter sets stay put more easily
Shorter lengths catch on less, which is one reason super short and short sets are such good everyday choices. Browse The Everyday Edit for easy, low-maintenance sets.
8. Fix a lifting nail early
If one nail starts to lift, don't wait. Gently remove it, clean off the old glue or tab, re-prep the natural nail and reapply it. Keep a spare tube of the hold nail glue or a pack of the switch adhesive tabs on hand for quick fixes.
